  • The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) are the generally accepted standards for professional appraisal practice in North America. USPAP contains standards for all types of appraisal services, including: real estate, personal property appraisal, business and mass appraisal.

  • The Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act of 1989 recognizes USPAP as the generally accepted appraisal standards and requires USPAP compliance for appraisers in federal-related transactions.

  • As there is no national license for personal property appraisers, USPAP compliancy is an important credential and one that the IRS uses to measure appraisals as acceptable for tax purposes. The IRS is much less likely to question appraisals completed by USPAP compliant appraisers.

Why do I need a professional personal property appraisal rather than a simple opinion of value?

 

  • The IRS requires that guns that are a significant part of an Estate be appraised for tax purposes. The same goes for collections of guns that are being donated to a museum, foundation, or non-profit as a tax deduction.

  • In divorce cases the firearms owned will often have to be valued to split up the assets.

  • In the case of bankruptcies, the guns are considered part of an individuals net worth, a certain amount of which, if properly documented, they get to keep.

  • Also individuals that need money for retirement or that need to raise cash have to know what their guns are really worth so that they can get a fair price. In addition surviving spouses or children will often want to sell a deceased persons firearms, but have no idea of their value.

 

Can't I get gun values at any local gun shop or retailer?

 

  • Yes, but most firearm or gun stores don't have accredited personal property appraisers on-site. You need a professionally trained personal property appraiser who knows the market and provides proper documentation and valuation.

  • Documentation by an accredited personal property appraiser is submissable in court proceedings and insurance claims. The appraiser can even be an expert witness on your behalf if the need arises.

  • Historically, as in any business where profits are made by buying from one person to sell to another, real market values are often deflated in order to build more profit for the gun shop. A professional personal property appraiser will value your items without a conflict of interest. The personal property appraiser's interest should be the documentable and unbiased actual market value!
